The Number One Rule of Business

The more I see of people starting new businesses and almost immediately having trouble, the more I become convinced that the number one rule of business is to:

  • Only make commitments that you can keep, and then…
  • Work like the very devil to keep the commitments you make.

This begins with the first meeting with a new client or customer – show up when you agreed to show up.  This is especially important for service businesses.

The relationship with a new client is so negatively impacted when either of these two key steps are not timely.  And timely delivery of a committed product or service is critical to so much, from getting paid for current work to the future relationship with the client.
